Why Study Clinical Therapeutic Programs

Be prepared to create a society in which individuals with communication and mental health needs are supported to participate in life. Eastern Kentucky University’s Department of Clinical Therapeutic Programs consists of students, faculty, alumni, and community partners who are making a true difference in the lives of others.

Help others find their voice. The EKU communication disorders programs prepare highly qualified and ethical speech-language pathologists and audiologists to provide effective, evidence-based services to persons of all ages and diverse backgrounds with communication and swallowing disorders and differences. EKU offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees through a fully accredited program that has been preparing speech-language pathologists and audiologists since 1969. We aspire to be the academic and clinical training leader in communication sciences and disorders among regional universities nationwide.

The counselor education programs at EKU are anchored by and in support of the counseling profession – a profession founded on holistic and humanistic principles that has evolved over the decades to meet a changing society and address its needs. The profession has its origin in the areas of counseling psychology, school guidance, and vocational rehabilitation counseling, and despite being a profession among many under the contemporary umbrella of the mental health field, professional counselors maintain distinction in their philosophy and approach to client treatment that is at the heart of EKU’s counselor education program.

Students in Eastern Kentucky University’s communication disorders programs have the opportunity to complete clinical practicum requirements in our Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, a non-profit clinic which has been serving the university and community since 1984.

The EKU Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic has three major functions:

  • Provide comprehensive clinical services for persons of all ages with communication problems,
  • Continue investigation and research on the nature and management of communication problems, and
  • Offer ongoing clinical instruction to students in speech-language pathology and audiology.

The majority of diagnostic and therapeutic services provided at this facility are provided by senior undergraduate and first-year graduate students. Student clinicians are fully prepared for therapy and work under the direct guidance of experienced faculty supervisors who hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in speech-language pathology or audiology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
